How do Photochromic Lenses Work?

Photochromic dyes work by changing their chemical structure when exposed to UV light. When these special molecules are exposed to UV rays, they undergo a chemical process that causes them to change shape. The new molecular structure absorbs portions of the visible light, causing the lenses to darken. The number of molecules that change shape varies with the intensity of the UV rays. In the absence of UV light, the molecules change back to their original form.

Who Benefits from Photochromic Lenses?

While almost all eyeglass wearers will enjoy the convenience and benefits of photochromic lenses, people with certain situations and lifestyles may benefit more than others. Those who may benefit most are:

  • Post-surgical patients: They often become more light-sensitive.
  • Contact lens wearers: They need glasses but don’t want to invest in multiple pairs.
  • Presbyopes: As near vision changes with age, the eye’s ability to adjust quickly to changing light conditions is also reduced.
  • Children: Photochromic lenses offer a durability and flexibility that kids’ active lifestyles demand. Without changing pairs, light responsive lenses protect their eyes both indoors and outdoors.
  • People with active and outdoor lifestyles: They need protection from UV radiation and excessive ambient light. They can’t always be bothered to switch glasses.
  • People who participate in outdoor leisure activities, such as gardening or golf, or who walk a great deal in their everyday lives: They need photochromic lenses that adjust to allow the optimum levels of light transmission in varying light conditions.
